海洋垃圾 (Marine Garbage)

最近上了一堂 FUNDAY 英文課談論海洋垃圾，這件事如果沒有新聞報導的話，一般民眾應該不會警覺事態嚴重，課堂談到太平洋垃圾帶 (The Great Pacific Garbage Patch)。

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is a collection of marine garbage in the Pacific Ocean.

The main source of the garbage is fishing activities.

Over 90% of the garbage is large plastic objects, and half of garbage consists of fishing nets and ropes.

This is horrible because it could end up in the human food chain eventually.

其實有在跑遠洋船舶的人都知道這件事，因為現代船舶設計為了充分運用船體，沒有設計垃圾儲存空間，並且國際船舶到處跑，靠港後當地政府也不會歡迎及協助處理這些垃圾，因此船艦航行時，垃圾就是隨手往海上拋棄，日積月累隨著海潮漂流，垃圾自然慢慢匯集在某處，當未來某天某個港口被垃圾阻礙，無法進出船航行時，或是眾人因為海產被垃圾汙染無法飲食，才會喚醒大眾的注意。

約 35 年前，因為搭貨櫃船實習，我才知道船上垃圾都是這樣處理的。根本處理的方法應該是船上設置垃圾處理機，並能把船上垃圾卸載於陸地上處理。
